FR/FRLS/ZHFR house wire

Fire‑retardant (FR), fire‑retardant low smoke (FRLS) and zero‑halogen flame‑retardant (ZHFR) house wires are single‑core building wires designed to minimize fire hazards. They use high‑conductivity copper conductors with specialized insulation compounds to limit flame propagation, reduce smoke emission and eliminate halogen gases during combustion.

Construction

Single or multi‑strand annealed copper conductor; insulation of FR PVC, FRLS PVC or halogen‑free low smoke compound; typically supplied in sizes 0.5–10 mm².

Cable standards

Manufactured to IS 694; conductor construction per IS 8130; variants meet flame‑retardant classifications such as IEC 60332‑1‑2 and smoke/halogen emission tests IEC 60754 and IEC 61034.

Technical specification

Rated voltage up to 1100 V; normal service temperature 70 °C (FR) or 85 °C (HR PVC/ZHFR); short‑circuit rating up to 160 °C; oxygen index ≥29 % (FR) or ≥30 % (FRLS) and ≥35 % (ZHFR); high‑voltage test 3 kV for 5 min.

Characteristics

FR wires limit flame spread; FRLS wires emit low smoke and lower halogen acid gas; ZHFR wires are halogen‑free with very low smoke and toxic fume emission; all have high insulation resistance and good mechanical strength.

Applications

Building wiring for lighting and power circuits; internal wiring of appliances; installations where fire safety and reduced smoke/toxic emissions are critical, such as high‑rise buildings, hospitals, theatres and public spaces.

Temperature index: It is temperature required to support combustion of insulating material under 21% Oxygen in air.

Smoke density: it is visibility during fire of insulating material.
